The department of Trauma and Orthopaedics at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust provides specialist trauma and elective orthopaedic services to a local population of around 550,000 people.

About our service

The department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Trust employs nineteen Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeons. All our consultants have completed their training in Trauma and Orthopaedics leading to entry on the Specialist Register and have also completed additional training in a particular sub-speciality area. This includes the management of a wide range of trauma and elective conditions affecting the upper and lower limbs.

In particular, we manage upper limb conditions affecting the shoulder, elbow and wrist, and lower limb conditions affecting the hip, knee, ankle and foot. We manage both elective conditions (which develop over time) and traumatic conditions which are caused by injury. Elective conditions include instability and arthritis, whereas traumatic conditions include fractures and dislocations.

If you have a problem with your hand, we do deal with some of these conditions although most hand problems are managed by our colleagues in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The trauma service deals with emergency presentations of fractures and other injuries to the upper and lower limbs (including approximately 550 hip fracture procedures annually), whereas the elective services we provide deal with planned operations for longer term problems such as instability and arthritis. This includes approximately 1,200 hip and knee replacement procedures each year.

Key achievements

Our hip fracture service is rated amongst the best in the country by the National Hip Fracture Database in achieving best practice in the management of these injuries. During 2020, we managed 550 hip fracture admissions and achieved best practice in 82% of cases. This includes comprehensive patient assessments, multidisciplinary team involvement and prompt surgery either on the same day or the day after admission.

Our elective performance data is analysed by the ‘Getting it Right First Time’ initiative and we also submit data to the National Joint Registry. Our results indicate that we are better than the national average in providing safe day case surgery to our patients for most procedures. Additionally, our rates of early revision for procedures including anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and total hip replacement are better than the national average indicating that patients can anticipate a reliable outcome in these procedures.

Meet our teams

Trauma/Emergency Coordinator Role

The Trauma/Emergency coordinators are a team of three, they organise the acute service for Orthopaedics. The team manage all patients at home who are awaiting surgery, starting by determining if a Virtual Fracture Clinic appointment or a face-to-face appointment is needed to discover the correct treatment.

The team then list home patients for surgery in a timely manner. Patients are contacted directly and given advice and information for their admission, including fasting instructions, medication advice, and the MRSA treatment plans.

As well as the patients awaiting surgery at home, the coordinators work closely with all of the Orthopaedic surgeons to ensure the ward-based patients are listed appropriately for surgery.
With  time critical management and the right surgical skill sets required to achieve the best outcome for all patients.

The coordinators work closely with many departments including all of the Orthopaedics doctors, the fracture clinic, the team in Virtual Fracture Clinic, Radiology, wards and of course Theatres.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your injury, please feel free to contact the coordinators. Our contact details are 01924 543013 and we work from:

  • Monday to Friday 6.30am — 4.30pm
  • Saturday and Sunday 6:30am – 12:30pm

Acute knee clinic

The acute knee clinic is run by 2 Advanced Physiotherapy practitioners on a Monday and Tuesday each week, based in the fracture clinic/orthopedic outpatient department, Gate 16 at Pinderfields hospital. We are supported by soft tissue knee surgeons Mr. James Newman, Mr. Vishal Rajput, Mr. Andrew Cohen and Mr. Zulfi Al. The clinic is for those who have attended the emergency department following a knee injury.

Within the clinic a detailed history and clinical examination will take place. You may have both face-to-face and telephone appointments. In our clinic, we have access to diagnostics such as XRAY and MRI scans, as there may be some circumstances in which these are required. You may be referred to other services such as Physiotherapy for rehabilitation to support your recovery. Following some injuries you may also be advised to wear a knee brace; all information will be provided at the time of your consultation.

If you are visiting our clinic, we will need to view your knee at the time of your appointment. Please make sure to bring with you a suitable pair of shorts / loose fitting trousers.

If you have any questions or concerns about your appointment or wish to talk to someone after, please contact the acute knee team on 01924546107 alternatively please contact 01924541000 and ask for the orthopaedics secretaries' team.
