Wakefield Trinity rugby team at Pinderfields Hospital

Over the festive period, players from Wakefield Trinity rugby team made a heartfelt visit to Pinderfields Hospital, leaving a lasting impact on a former rugby player and his family during an extremely difficult time.

The visit, which coincided with David Garbett, a former rugby player for Keighley Cougars and Halifax Panthers, receiving the devastating news that he would be going home to receive end of life care.

David’s family reached out to Callum Pollard, Fundraising Manager of MY Hospitals Charity, to request a visit from the Wakefield Trinity players, to which they kindly obliged.

The team spent time with David and his family, explaining that they recognised him and remembered watching him play in his rugby days. The encounter was emotional for everyone involved, bringing immense comfort in such a difficult time.

Following the visit, David’s family expressed they felt more accepting of the situation, as though it had truly made a difference to them, his daughter, Amanda, commenting: “Thank you so much, the visit was a truly amazing moment for my dad. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Callum Pollard, Fundraising Manager for MY Hospitals Charity, said: “As a charity, we strive to bring comfort and joy to those who need it most, especially during the festive season.

“The visit to David Garbett was a powerful reminder of the impact small acts of kindness can have. Seeing the players connect with David and his family in such a meaningful way truly encapsulates the spirit of community and compassion that MY Hospitals Charity stands for.”
