MYHT becomes fourth NHS Trust in the UK to sign MoU with BAPIO | News

Martin Barkley, Chief Executive of the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust (MYHT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Trust and The British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO), a non-profit organisation open to all healthcare professionals, promoting diversity, equality and inclusion. This makes MYHT only the fourth NHS trust in the UK to sign such an agreement.

The signing of the MoU is just one of the steps the Trust is taking to ensure it further establishes a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion at MYHT. The aim is to ensure that the Trust has a supportive environment for clinical staff, especially those joining the Trust from overseas. The signing of the MoU will launch a project of work with the Trust’s local BAPIO lead to support overseas doctors new to the NHS for induction to MYHT, familiarisation with NHS practice and assisting with settling in the UK.

Working closely with BAPIO will have many benefits for the Trust and its staff, including the agreement that BAPIO will be able to provide insightful training that will help all MYHT staff to understand the causes and effects of race inequality.

Martin Barkley, Chief Executive of the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said;

“Ever since I joined the Trust four years ago I have been clear that I think we need to do much more to support our BAME workforce.

“I am so pleased that we have signed this agreement - working closely with BAPIO is only one of many actions we intend to undertake to try to ensure we have a culture and atmosphere in the Trust that BAME colleagues find nurturing.

“Every person should be able to fulfil their potential at work, regardless of their background, identity or circumstance and I look forward to continuing to make progress.”
