Patients taking part in clinical trials at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust are now benefitting from being treated in a dedicated research space at the Pinderfields Hospital site.

The Clinical Research and Innovation Building (CRIB) has been created in a refurbished, standalone building, with support from funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

The building boasts three clinic rooms, two consulting rooms, space for post treatment observation, as well as a welcoming waiting area and dedicated patient parking. It also houses a dedicated pharmacy and pathology room with temperature monitored fridges and secure storage.

Dr John Ashcroft, Director of Research at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, said: “ Research is turning promising ideas or interesting theories into real benefits for Mid Yorkshire’s patients and members of the local community. The evidence shows that patients who are treated at research active hospitals have better outcomes.

“This dedicated research facility will transform the way patients take part in clinical trials here at Mid Yorkshire, improving patient experience.”

Clinical research is the study of health and illness in people. The Trust’s Research Team works with patients, universities, commercial sponsors and others to take the best new ideas from cutting-edge science and use them to create new tests and treatments that benefit patients more quickly.

Dr Richard Robinson, Chief Medical Officer at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, added: “Research is a crucial piece in the puzzle of improving health outcomes for our communities. To get the best results, we need people from a range of ages, backgrounds, and ways of life to take part in trials.

“ The Trust currently has research projects running ranging from testing new surgical devices and drugs, to studies aimed at helping us to improve our understanding of many health issues. This dedicated space will hopefully help encourage more people to get involved in research.

“As a Teaching Trust, this facility will also enhance learning experiences and provide more opportunities for our staff to get involved in research.”
