MY Consultant - Dr Susannah Thoms

Dr Susannah Thoms

Dr Susannah Thoms is a newly recruited Consultant at the Mid Yorkshire Hospital’s NHS Trust, who began her career after her child received care at one of our hospital sites. This is Dr Thoms’ story…

Hello, my name is Susannah Thoms, I am a mum to three children and two cockapoos, and I have recently been appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist with special interests in Burns, Plastic Surgery and Paediatrics.

Most of my consultant training has been in South and West Yorkshire, this is where my passion for medical education blossomed, particularly during the challenging years of speciality training. This training gave me insight into how vast the role of a consulting within acute care can be.

Following a role as a local trainee representative for South Yorkshire, I was elected to represent trainees nationally on the Royal College of Anaesthetists training committee.

During the same period, I also spent a formative and very interesting year as Chief Registrar at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, undertaking quality improvement work and representing trainees of all specialities. Both these roles provided me with the developmental needed to progress and were an enjoyable experience. I aspire to continue with these interests as my career progresses.

I requested to spend my final year of training, the advanced year, at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and have never looked back. Within the first few weeks, I knew I had found my work family!

After years of extensive training, especially with having children along the way, I was offered the post as a Consultant Anaesthetist at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. This role provided me the opportunity to work in the clinical areas I am passionate about with some excellent teams.

This was a very special accomplishment for me, as it is more than just a role. After my 4-year-old needed surgery, not long after I rotated, it was the Trust that provided exceptional care. I was grateful for the care he received and from that day knew it was the place for me.

I am over the moon I am now able to offer other members of the Wakefield and Kirklees district the same level of care I was provided and proud to have joined an outstanding department of supportive, friendly colleagues. I am proud to be part of the Mid Yorkshire team.
