MY Consultant - Dr James Gauci
Dr James Gauci is a consultant who joined the Trust as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in September 2022. This is Dr Gauci’s professional journey, so far…
Hello, my name is Dr James Gauci, I am Consultant Gastroenterologist at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
I see myself as a passionate individual who is always seeking to learn more and develop further.
I completed my core training in Gastroenterology in 2021 in Malta. My area of interest is Pancreaticobiliary Medicine and Endoscopy, and I completed a fellowship at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust in this subspeciality.
I took up my first Consultant job at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust in September 2022. With the support of my colleagues, I set up a specialist Pancreaticobiliary clinic and expanded the ERCP service. Our team now looks forward to establishing a local Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) service in the coming months. This gold standard service would allow for increased convenience and a significant reduction in waiting times for our patients. It would also increase the reputability of this trust.
I enjoy working in Gastroenterology as it provides the opportunity to solve complex diagnostic dilemmas and perform technically challenging procedures. I am enthusiastic about research and have obtained a master’s degree in this field. My work looked at genomics in pancreatic cancer and techniques to improve the yield of sampling at EUS. Enhancing the trust’s involvement in research will strengthen our offering to patients and staff.
This trust aspires to obtain Teaching Hospital status. Medical education is a role which gives me great satisfaction. I have experience in both under- and post-graduate teaching, and the supervision of junior staff. I have recently been given the opportunity to take on an educational leadership role at this trust, which is something I value greatly.
Finally, I am very motivated by the positive outlook of the multidisciplinary team I work with, here at Mid Yorks. I am proud to say that our Gastroenterology team is composed of various dedicated, energetic, and skilled health professionals. It is a pleasure working with them, and I would recommend it. Just a warning though and excuse the pun here – it takes some guts!
