MY Consultant - Dr Irfan Jeeva

Dr Ifran Jeeva

Dr Irfan Jeeva is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Mid Yorkshire Hospital’s NHS Trust who began his healthcare career after graduating in 2014. Dr Jeeva starting his career with the Trust in 2023, and since then has begun treating patients across the community.

Hello, my name is Dr Irfan Jeeva, I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist & Head of Ophthalmology Service at the Trust, which means oversee the delivery of diagnose and treat eye and vision problems for patients across the Wakefield and Kirklees district.

To get to know me better, I wanted to share with you a little bit about me so when/if you need my care, we will already feel like old friends.

Throughout my life I have gained several hobbies, such as travelling, reading, cooking and music. I love to cook for my wife Farheen, and my twins, Rumi, and Zahra. I would say I am pretty good at cooking, but I make a better consultant.

My journey as an ophthalmologist began in 1996 as a health science student where I gained an interest in this speciality. I completed my training at the Yorkshire School of Ophthalmology, the largest school of Ophthalmology outside of London. I graduated with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) was an extremely proud moment in my professional career

I started my NHS career working at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, then at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

I then became a technical advisor for the World Health Organisation (WHO) and a member of the National Committee of Eye Health Care in Pakistan. During this time my role was dedicated to sharing my expertise to support WHO in developing actions for eye care in health systems. Over the several years on the National Committee of Eye Health, I was able to help several hospitals in various part of the world develop their eye care systems, this included Tanzania and Afghanistan.

I then took the opportunity to move to Pakistan where I was the Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at the Aga Khan University Hospital. I did this role for just less than nine years and during this time I learnt a great deal, which I have shared through many peers’ review articles in medical journals and through developing guidelines for conditions like Retinoblastoma and Retinopathy of Prematurity.

I have a passion for helping people and being able to build on my specialty in a way that can benefit others. If you are interested in finding out about more of the work, I have done in different parts of the globe. My past opportunities have now led me to my current role within the Trust. This role is one I have been in since March 2023, during this short time I have met some wonderful people.

I am excited of the possibilities within this role, as the Trust covers a wide range of ophthalmology, general and sub-specialties including:

  • glaucoma,
  • paediatric ophthalmology,
  • diabetes mellitus,
  • age-related macular degeneration,
  • cornea and anterior segment,
  • oculoplastic,
  • neuro-ophthalmology,
  • medical retina,
  • and uveitis services.

The Trusts Ophthalmology department has a dedicated team with state-of-the-art technology to help look after their patients. We have high dreams of being the best, and a desire to achieve them.

It is an honour to become the Head of Ophthalmology Service at the Trust.
