My Doctor Appreciation Week Dominic Lowe

Dr Dominic Lowe

Hello, my name is Dominic Lowe.

I currently work as a medical Senior House Officer (SHO) at Mid Yorks. I've spent two out of my first five years here as a doctor since qualifying from the University of Manchester in 2019. My first day as a doctor started on Gate 12 at Pinderfields hospital, I’ll never forget that first day or the first year, especially as we navigated the early challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic together.

Becoming a doctor has been incredibly rewarding. The blend of scientific reasoning, patient communication, and teamwork with colleagues makes every shift both challenging and fulfilling.

This profession demands lifelong learning. It requires mastering the intricacies of physiology and biochemistry and the practical skills of performing procedures and clinical examination. The dynamic nature of the job requires adaptability, with frequent shifts out of hours and many rotations across different departments and hospitals in the early years.

During my time with the trust, I have worked in a broad spectrum of departments, including Elderly Care, Urology, General Surgery, Haematology, Respiratory Medicine, Acute Medicine, and Intensive Care. The invaluable lessons and inspiration I've drawn from the incredible teamwork I’ve witnessed has profoundly shaped the way I practice medicine.

It's an ongoing honour to work alongside such talented teams and to learn from the diverse skills I see on display every day. I wish to pass on the knowledge and experiences I've gained to new staff and doctors, hoping to pay forward the mentorship I've received.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing the saxophone with The Leeds Project Big Band, performing at various venues and festivals around West Yorkshire. Making music with friends is a wonderful way to unwind after an eventful shift.

Despite the demands of the job, it is a true privilege to treat patients and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of wonderfully talented individuals. I wouldn't trade this career for any other, and I feel fortunate to have spent my initial years at Mid Yorks.
