MY Doctor Appreciation Week Courtney Johnson

Dr Courtney Johnson

Hello, my name is Dr Courtney Johnson and I'm a Senior Clinical Fellow in Medical Education and Simulation/ACCS Anaesthetics CT1

When I attended University of Leeds Medical School, I vividly remember coming to Mid Yorks for an acute care placement. I rotated through Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Anaesthetics, and although my time in each department was short, I was overwhelmed by how willing everybody was to get me involved, and how keen people were to teach me.

The value that Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust places on education is incredible. It is one of the reasons that I chose to rotate here for my Foundation Year 2 training, and to then join the Education Team as a Clinical Fellow following my Foundation Years.

Within this latter role, I started to develop my own educational abilities, contributing to the teaching of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate Foundation Doctors, as well as helping to deliver amazing interprofessional teaching initiatives to help improve relationships between the whole healthcare team. I was also encouraged to pursue my own teaching interests; this led to me devising a major trauma teaching program for medical students, which I then presented at a national and international conference.

The MYTT Education Team have provided me with both the support and resources I need to develop a portfolio career. This year, I have started training in anaesthesia in a less than full time capacity in Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust, but I also continue my teaching role with MYTT at 20 per cent of whole time equivalent. I am one of five fellows to hold such a hybrid role, and I truly believe that this balance helps to maintain our wellbeing, allowing us to continue both the teaching and clinical work that we love.
