My Consultant – Dr Mohammed Aldiwani
Consultant Urological Surgeon Mohammed Aldiwani credits his time training at Mid Yorks with cementing his desire to pursue his chosen specialism. He has now returned the trust . This is his story …
Hello, my name is Mohammed Aldiwani, and I am consultant urological surgeon with a special interest in robotics and kidney surgery.
I was born in London although my family moved to Yorkshire early in my formative years and it's where I have always considered as home.
My medical career has taken me to many places. I studied Medicine in Manchester, then did my early junior doctor training in Yorkshire, including two years at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals. I moved to London again for my specialist registrar training, working at top class institutions such as Imperial College and The Royal Marsden Hospital. During this journey in postgraduate training, I also had the pleasure of working in Australia and South Africa at different points in my career.
The latest chapter of my training took place at Frimley Renal Cancer Centre, a high-volume robotic kidney cancer centre. Here I mastered the skills of robotic surgery via the retroperitoneal approach, which brings benefits of quicker recovery times to patients and less blood loss. This is a highly desirable skillset but few people in UK are trained to do it. I am proud to bring this experience to Mid Yorks and we are the only centre in the region offering this.
Coming back as a Urology Consultant to Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust is a very fitting return. One decade ago, I was here starting my first core surgical attachment. I was undecided about my chosen specialty at that point, or whether a career in surgery was even for me. This was the placement that cemented my desire to be a urologist. I felt welcomed, engaged, and encouraged by my seniors at that time, most of whom are still in the department today.
Mid Yorkshire Urology is and has always been a well-run, friendly, and fun unit with a passionate attitude towards teaching and delivering a high quality of service to the population. The department has frequently inspired junior doctors rotating through to adopt a career in urology, as was the case for me. We also deliver an excellent standard of complex care at the highest level. I hope to expand our training reputation to those at the end of training with a fellowship scheme which is something I greatly benefited from and can boost the reputation of the unit, attracting the highest calibre of professionals to join our team.
Here at Mid Yorkshire Urology, I believe we offer some of the best care in the region and with our forward thinking cohort of consultants, we can continue to pave the way in delivering a high quality service, adopting progressive technologies and techniques in order to advance the care we provide and also showcase this success to elevate the reputation in the region and nationally.
