My Consultant – Dr Irfan Omar
Irfan Omar is a newly recruited Consultant at the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, who has returned to the trust as a senior doctor after completing his early training here. This is Dr Omar’s story…
Hello, my name is Irfan Omar, I am a new dad to my young daughter, and I have recently been appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist here at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust.
I first came to Mid Yorks as a junior doctor back in 2011. I still clearly remember the first day I arrived and walked through corridors. I remember thinking to myself that this was where I belonged. I spent a fantastic four years here, that formed the foundations stones of my career. I learned a lot and made some great friends – friendships that I still have today.
The training in anaesthetics at Pinderfields is sought after, and rightly so. The mentoring while training and learning is exceptional. It gives you the confidence to develop and hone your skills, while knowing there is someone on hand to support you.
I left the trust in 2015 to continue my training and retuned again in 2018 as a senior registrar. Then in 2023, I returned to the trust again, taking a role as a Consultant Anaesthetist.
I have worked in some fantastic hospitals and with some great people throughout my career, but Mid Yorks has never left me. It has had an indescribable impact on how I work and carry myself. I think the trust offers a very personal touch – and that’s what has kept me coming back. Every time I have returned at different stages of my career, I have been welcomed with open arms. It has always felt like coming home.
What sets Mid Yorks apart from other places I’ve worked is the people. There is a real sense of teamwork and belonging. Whether that’s my fellow doctors, the nurses, and the allied health professionals or the porters and other support staff. There is a real, powerful sense that everyone is working together for the good of our patients, and that everyone is supporting each other – and that is a great place to be.
The trust is also not afraid to make changes, which is very refreshing. Each time I returned after a period away, there has been a positive change or improvement made, which benefits both the staff and the patients. That receptiveness to change and innovation is crucial to improving patient experience.
I am so proud to be part of the Mid Yorkshire team and have loved every bit of my time here since returning.
