Case study: Sarah, Student Nurse

Sarah, Student Nurse

Sarah is a Student Nurse at the Mid Yorkshire Hospital’s NHS Trust who began her career as a Healthcare Assistant. She started her career with a passion to care for others and has progressed through numerous roles due to her drive.

I knew from an early age I wanted to be a nurse, I have always had an interest in health, at school I studied sports development and fitness but when it came to making the decision on my career, I felt I had to choose a different one due to finances at that time.

When I eventually found my path into nursing and started at the Trust, I began as a healthcare assistant and was nursing patients with acute cardiac conditions, working on the cardiology ward or coronary care. To date, I am still home grown on the cardiology ward; they taught me everything I know and have been the best role models from me being a healthcare assistant to my current learning as a registered nurse apprentice.

I loved every minute of being a healthcare assistant, I knew I’d found the place for me as I looked forward to talking with the patients, I loved to hear their life stories. I loved being able to provide compassionate care and be there for someone in their time of need.

Once I was comfortable being a healthcare assistant, I wanted more responsibility and this is when I developed as a trainee nursing associate. This was a new experience but not one that was world apart from the healthcare assistant role in which I had all the support I needed. Support that I now pass on to other healthcare assistants who want to progress in their careers during mentoring sessions.

I have now been given an opportunity to further progress in my career, funded by the Trust I am on my way to becoming a Registered Nurse Degree Apprentice and in the future I hope to be a specialist nurse in cardiology.

I can’t thank the Trust enough for helping me achieve my dream jobs. My advice to others would be to do in house training within the Trust and they can help you achieve your goals.
