Blogmas: Learning Disability 8-week Surgical Pathway team

Learning Disability 8-week Surgical Pathway team

Our Learning Disability 8-week Surgical Pathway team was developed and implemented by Neil Brown, Rebecca Saville and Richard Bunn. The Pathway scooped a Celebrating Excellence Award in the Outstanding Service Improvement, Research and Innovation – Clinical category.  During the Covid-19 pandemic it was recognised that patients with a learning disability were waiting longer for their operations due to their procedures being classed as routine. Thanks to the pathway patients with a learning disability are now prioritised for surgery and benefitting from an increased life expectancy.

Here's Neil to kick off our festive countdown:

There’s lots of exciting things happening at Mid Yorks, what are your plans for the coming year?

Our plans are to spread and scale the 8 week surgical pathway to cover the front end of a patients pathway by arranging an out-patient appointment within 8 weeks. The aim would be to see and treat any patients with a Learning Disability in 22 weeks or sooner (8 weeks for OP, 6 weeks for Diagnostic and 8 weeks for surgery). Once in place we would love to spread this through the WYAAT Trusts and beyond.
